Control access to files and folders with Folder Guard

Folder Guard® offers an access control model that is much simpler that the built-in access control of Windows Vista/XP/2000. Instead of setting up user groups, access control lists, inheritance rules, etc., Folder Guard lets you define the common access control settings for its built-in user name Default, and then set up any exceptions to the rules for each user of your computer. Unlike Windows Vista/XP/2000, Folder Guard can protect access to folders located not only on the NTFS disks, but also on the FAT/FAT32 drives. In addition, you can use Folder Guard to set up access control on computers with Windows Me/98, which don't have any built-in access control capabilities.

To set up access control with Folder Guard, first decide how you want to protect a folder for most of the users (represented by the built-in user name Default within Folder Guard), and then decide which users should have exceptions to the rules.

For example, if you want a folder to be hidden and inaccessible to all users except yourself, then you should assign the hidden and no access attributes to that folder for the Default user, and then assign the visible and full access attributes to the folder for your own user account. This way, you will be able to see and access the folder without limitations, while other users will not be able to do that, because of its attributes set up for the Default user.

Or, if you want a folder to be fully accessible to all users except for a specific user, then assign the visible and full access attributes to that folder for the Default user, and then assign the hidden and no access attributes to the folder for the user account you want to be restricted from accessing the folder.

To assign the user-specific access control and visibility attributes to a folder for a specific user, first use the Protect - User List command to add the Windows login name of that user to the User List of Folder Guard:

Add a CPL file you want to protect

Then select the user's login name in the User List of Folder Guard and use the commands on the Protect menu to assign the desired access control and visibility attributes to the folder in question:

Assign the access control attributes for the specific user

Repeat these steps for each user you want to have specific access rights to the folder. Remember that if you don't assign an attribute to a folder for some user, then the Default user's attributes of that folder would be used by FolderGuard.
